Islam in the Maldives

Based on historical evidence, it would seem that the Maldives Island were at one time Buddhist.  Some very old Buddhist temples have been found on a few of the islands.

This is the large Islamic Center built in Male in  1984.  The Grand Mosque within the center holds up to 5,000 people.

The tomb of Abu-al Barakaat who brought Islam to the Maldives Islands in 1153.

The tomb of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar who built the Friday Mosque or Hukuru Miskily in 1656.  The Friday Mosque is located near the Sultan's burial site.
